Monkeys are enemies and non-playable characters in Shovel Pirate and the Super Cat Tales series.

Physical appearance[edit]

Monkeys have brown fur with areas of their face, paws, chest and ears colored peach. They have round heads that jut out slightly near the bottom and can be seen with their arms to the ground. They have a pair of black, curved eyes and a black mouth shaped like a short horizontal line with a dot of brown just above the midpoint of the mouth.

In Shovel Pirate, the monkey has two small pink cheek spots.

Enemy role[edit]

Behavior[edit]

Monkeys will walk back and forth on higher platforms, pausing at the edges before turning and walking in the opposite direction. When the player is in close enough proximity, they will throw baseballs towards the player that will bounce several times before disappearing. Monkeys may also be seen standing on the ground and will run off-screen away from the player as they approach, though monkeys that throw baseballs typically do not react in this manner.

In Shovel Pirate, monkeys appear in beach and jungle-themed levels. They are found on treetops and will also throw baseballs. If the player stands on the treetop next to one, it will run in the opposite direction and turn at walls and ledges, disappearing once the player's camera is out of the monkey's view.

Types[edit]

Some monkeys have other appearances with different behaviors:

  • Floating - Monkeys may appear resting on red or blue floats on the surface of the water. These monkeys remain stationary and do not react to the player's presence.
  • Rope climbing - Monkeys can be seen climbing up and down ropes and will throw baseballs when the player is nearby.
  • White fur - White fur monkeys only appear in Super Cat Tales 2 and have the same behavior as normal monkeys.

Strategy[edit]

  • In Shovel Pirate, monkeys can be defeated with a single direct hit from any side using the shovel. The player can also deflect the monkey's baseballs using the shovel, which will cause the baseball to defeat any enemies that come into contact with it as well as the monkey. If the player jumps nearby the treetop the monkey is located on, it may run away, though this may cause damage if the monkey runs towards the player while fleeing.
  • In Super Cat Tales: PAWS, monkeys can be defeated by running into them from any direction with any cat in Super Cat Tales: PAWS or equipping an attacking helper.
  • In Super Cat Tales 2, the player can defeat any monkey by running into them with McMeow, Olli or Robo Kitty. If the player runs towards the monkey while it is throwing the baseball, they may be hit by the baseball and stop running. Equipping the shield can prevent the player from the baseball as long as it hits the cat's front side. Floating monkeys can be defeated with the dive mask from underneath the water.

NPC role[edit]

Monkeys appear as non-playable characters throughout the Super Cat Tales series. In the first Super Cat Tales, monkeys are seen shooting a cannon at the cats' hot air balloon in the opening cutscene, causing the cats to crash and become separated.

Monkeys that appear in villages and levels as NPCs can sometimes be seen wearing a red fez hat. One monkey in the Sandfalls level of Super Cat Tales: PAWS can be seen at the start of each room, providing the player with directions on which sandfall to descend.
