Traps are obstacles in Shovel Pirate. They only appear in jungle levels.

Physical appearance[edit]

Traps are gray-colored and square-shaped with a slightly wider top and bottom. A white-bordered circle is on the right or left side of the trap while the other side has a semicircle with the curved part moving inwards outlined in a darker shade of gray with a horizontal line running from the flat side to the end of the curved side. This side also holds an arrow with a pointed triangular white tip and a short, brown beam.

Behavior[edit]

Traps are encountered with an arrow, typically on a lower platform against a ledge to a slightly higher platform. If the player enters the direct horizontal path of the trap, it will quickly dispense its arrow, which will fire in a straight horizontal line along the ground until it hits a wall or goes off-screen. This will cause the pirate to take damage if they are caught in the crossfire. Once triggered, the trap will remain dormant for the remainder of the level and not fire any additional arrows.

The top part of the trap is solid and the player can stand on it like a normal platform and not take damage.

Strategy[edit]

Traps can be triggered using any object or enemy. If an enemy is caught in the crossfire, it will be defeated. The player can use this to walk into the path of the trap after it is triggered without taking damage themselves, as some items such as gems or keys may be located in the crossfire. It is also possible for the player to trigger the trap with the pirate without taking damage by jumping as the arrow fires, though the speed of the arrow may be faster than the player's ability to jump out of the way.

The following objects and enemies can be used to trigger traps:

  • Rock Rock - The player can move rocks in a level with their shovel and push them towards the direction of the trap.
  • Monkey Monkey - Baseballs thrown by monkeys can set off traps if the baseball lands in the firing path. The player can stand in the general direction of a nearby monkey to have it throw a baseball towards the player.
  • Mouse Mouse - If a mouse is unearthed from a dirt clod, it may run away from the pirate and fall into the path of a trap.
  • Tribe minion Tribe minion - Tribe minions can be pushed back when shoveling their masked side. If positioned near a trap, the player can make them fall backwards to set it off.
