Ladders are interactive objects in Shovel Pirate. They can be found in beach, graveyard and jungle levels.

Physical appearance

Ladders are brown with a black outline. They have two thin rectangular beams and thin rectangular rungs. Some of the rungs are crooked.

Behavior

Ladders are present between some platforms with elevation. The pirate can ascend and descend ladders at the base or from directly above using the up and down keys. While on the ladder, the player will not be able to jump or use their shovel. They can exit the sides of the ladder by moving right or left, as long as there is open space on those sides. Upon reaching the top of the ladder, the pirate will make a small jump upon exiting. This comes into play in Level 15, where the player can take damage from the flamethrower if they exit the top of the ladder while the flame directly above them is active.

On mobile, the jump and shovel buttons are used to ascend and descend ladders respectively. The shovel button is replaced with the down arrow key when near a ladder (including at the base on the ground), thereby making the player unable to use their shovel.
