The pirate is the main playable character of Shovel Pirate.

Physical appearance[edit]

The pirate has a round body with a wider base and thinner, taller top and is colored light blue with light pink sides. On the front side, the pirate has a light pink belly button and a peach-colored mouth. They have a pair of round, dark orange hands and a pair of dark orange feet. The pirate wears a burgundy bandana with pink spots and carries a shovel with a brown handle and a gray blade with a rounded point.

Hats[edit]

In the Poki version of Shovel Pirate, the player can unlock wearable hats by watching an ad, which is prompted every two levels completed. There are nine additional hats that can be unlocked in a random order, which can be selected by clicking on the hat button in the top-right corner to the left of the pause button. Sprites for the pirate wearing each of the hats can be found in the game files of the Steam version 1.0.1, but they were not added until version 1.0.2.

History[edit]

There is no explicitly shown lore in Shovel Pirate.

Abilities[edit]

The pirate is controlled by the player and can jump as well as descend and ascend ladders. When digging up large radishes, the pirate has the ability to regain health by eating one if they have already lost one hit of health in the level. If the pirate loses health, they have a brief moment of invincibility, allowing them to pass through hazards and enemies unharmed.

The pirate is equipped with a shovel, allowing them to perform the following activities:

  • Digging up clods, lumps of sand and radish shoots.
  • Breaking bricks.
  • Defeating enemies.
  • Pushing forward rocks, skulls from skeletons and uncollected items.
  • Deflecting baseballs thrown by monkeys.
  • Going behind and in front of fences.
  • Activating the flag pole to complete the level.
