The Super Cat Tales 2.5D game or Super Cat Tales Tower game[1] is a platformer that was first announced on June 11, 2020. It was developed in Unity for PC, mobile and console. The game involves "dream[s] and reality mix[ing] together"[2] and is inspired by classic games including Klonoa[3]. The gameplay mechanics also share similarities with the Neutronized Flash game Dream Tower.

The protagonist is Alex, who awakens to the sound of wind and is trapped in a bubble. This bubble will allow him to temporarily float upwards when jumping off small obstacles or ledges. The gameplay will feature exploration and traditional platform mechanics, along with new characters as well as familiar ones from the Super Cat Tales series.[4].

The game paused development, with "losing...creative momentum" cited as the reason for its hiatus. After the Steam release of Shovel Pirate on February 15, 2024, Gionathan became motivated again to resume working on it and expanding its release to include the Steam platform.[5] The game's project file breaks in the latest version of Unity, which Gionathan mentions as the main problem with continuing its development.[6]

Controls[edit]

The player will only be given the ability to move left or right.[7]

Gameplay[edit]

The player controls Alex, who navigates a tower while in a bubble. Alex will interact with the environment differently when moving left or right. When Alex walks off a ledge, for instance, he will float and spin around in his bubble. If the player moves him left and right, he will continue floating upwards while moving horizontally, but will fall if all horizontal movement is paused.[7]

Enemies[edit]

Several enemies have been revealed in devlogs:

  • Rock minion
  • Bat

Announcements[edit]

  • June 11, 2020 - A teaser trailer is launched showing Alex, surrounded by a bubble, climbing up a tall, thin tower. Several Tamago are situated among different platforms, some of whom talk to the player. In the pinned comments, Neutronized mentions that future devlogs will be posted and the game will be shaped according to commenters' feedback.
  • June 13, 2020 - Gionathan releases the first in a series of devlogs, explaining how he got the idea for the game, along with some details about the graphics and gaming platforms.[8]
  • October 2, 2020 - The second devlog relating to this game is released, in which Gionathan contemplates whether the game should allow the player to kill enemies or be strictly pacifist. He asks for feedback in the comments section.
  • October 18, 2020 - The third devlog is released, in which Gionathan details how the game will use simplified controls designed to work on most platforms, particularly mobile.
  • December 5, 2020 - Gionathan reveals a night area featuring rock enemies of varied heights as well as bats. Interactive objects and hazards present include moving spiked rocks that can crush the player and cannons that can boost the player upwards when ignited.[9]
  • January 21, 2021 - A fire powerup is announced via Twitter and is paired with a GIF of Alex obtaining it to light a fuse. The powerup will be used for clearing spiky vines and activating cannons. The tweet also asks for additional powerup suggestions.[10]
  • January 23, 2021 - Gionathan releases Indie Devlog #4 and showcases the new fire powerup. In the devlog, it is seen that red rings will de-equip the powerup.[11]
  • July 12, 2024 - In response to an announcement regarding Twitter/X's algorithm update, Neutronized posts a GIF showing a preview of Alex ascending the tower in a nighttime setting. Alex is seen navigating through spiky areas and collects a fireball powerup, which causes two fireballs to surround his bubble. Using this item, Alex is able to disintegrate the thorns below him and move toward a brown rope underground. Upon touching the outside of the rope, it catches on fire and starts burning up the rope until it reaches a cannon, causing Alex to be propelled upwards when inside.[12]
  • August 2, 2024 - Gionathan publishes a devlog on YouTube mentioning that he has resumed work on the 2.5D tower game (which he mentions as the "3D tower project"). He considers a Steam release and mentions the project file's incompatibility with the latest Unity version to be the main hindrance for its continued development.
