Zombie Goes Up (mobile) Picnic Penguin Slime Labs

Picnic Penguin is a Sokoban-inspired mobile puzzle game released on January 13, 2021 for iOS and Android. The player controls a penguin that can push blocks around an enclosed area in order to get food to a picnic blanket.

Controls[edit]

When pressing and holding, an arrow will appear around the penguin, allowing it to move in the direction that the player moves their finger towards.

Gameplay[edit]

The goal of the game is to get the food pushed onto the picnic blanket. Multiple blocks can be pushed at the same time to reconstruct pathways.[1] Blocks have different sizes and thicknesses, indicating their weight. They can be pushed into one another and moved so long as the block that the player directly pushes is taller than the adjacent blocks. If the block is thinner, it will be stopped by the thicker blocks when pushed.[2]

Players can collect tokens throughout the levels, which they can use on an in-game gashapon. This allows them to obtain different skins and playable characters, one of whom includes Brutus.[3]

Levels[edit]

Picnic Penguin has eighty levels spread across four packs. Each pack has its own setting and enemy. New elements are also introduced, which are integrated with elements from previous packs.

  • Lunch Break - This pack involves tutorials showing the player the basics of the game. Basic blocks of various widths and thicknesses are introduced, along with star blocks. The enemy of this pack is the skeleton, which moves a few blocks at a time. It will move towards the player when they are outside of the main level area.
  • Office Space - This pack introduces blocks that can only be pushed horizontally or vertically, as well as teleporters. The enemies of this level are employees, who wander around the outside of the level and will charge towards the player in a straight line upon seeing them.
  • Beach Brunch - This pack introduces key blocks and buttons. The enemy of this pack is Polpo, who can shoot a stream of bubbles at the player.
  • Royal Banquet - This pack introduces spiky blocks, which will kill the player upon pushing them. The enemy of this pack is the flame creature, who retains the same behaviour from previous games in the Neutronized universe.

Enemies[edit]

Enemies can be encountered in some levels. They will always appear on the outside perimeter and on stages where the player is required to move outside the main enclosed area to complete the puzzle. Each level pack has its own unique enemy with their own distinct behaviours. All enemies have appeared in previous games in the Neutronized universe.

  • Skeletons - Walk a few blocks before briefly pausing. They will move towards the player if they enter the outer perimeter.
  • Employees - Charge towards the player in a straight line upon spotting them. When not charging, they pace a couple blocks at a time, then pause to look around before continuing on their trajectory.
  • Polpo - Walks a few blocks before pausing and looking around, similar to the employees. Upon spotting the player, however, they will fire a stream of bubbles. These bubbles can travel into the main area, but will not pass through blocks or other obstacles.
  • Flame creatures - Constantly move back and forth horizontally or vertically, leaving a stream of fire behind them.

Gashapon[edit]

The player can access a gashapon machine from the menu screen. This allows the player to deposit five in-game coins in exchange for a new playable character. If the player tries to use the gashapon with less than five coins, they will be prompted to get more coins through in-app purchases. There are ten characters that can be unlocked.

Gionathan shows a preview of some of the food graphics, both in pixel art and the low poly res form.
  • November 26, 2020 - Neutronized released a video on their YouTube channel showcasing Picnic Penguin's gameplay, and also tweeted formally announcing the game on the same day.[5]
  • December 5, 2020 - Gionathan directly addresses Picnic Penguin in his indie devlog number 5. He mentions wanting to improve upon the original Sokoban formula and introduces the mechanic of pushing blocks of different weights. The gashapon is also brought up and explained in more detail.[6]
