Super Cat Tales 2 is the second game in the Super Cat Tales series, released on October 4, 2018 on the App Store and Google Play store. It was first revealed on April 4, 2018 with the release of its announce trailer. The final content update was released on May 7, 2020, thus completing the game.[1]

Despite its title, the events of Super Cat Tales 2 take place before the first Super Cat Tales and shows how Alex meets and forms a team with the other cats to protect Neko Land from the uprising of the Tin Army. The following main game, Super Cat Tales: PAWS, narratively precedes the events of Super Cat Tales 2.

Controls[edit]

  • Tap & hold left/right - Move in the respective direction
    • Double tap & hold - Run in the respective direction

Gameplay[edit]

The player controls the selected cat by tapping and holding on either the left or right end of the screen. A double tap and hold causes the cat to run, allowing it to jump across gaps or onto walls. Cats can be encountered in various levels on the map, each with their own abilities. Some of these abilities are required to access secret parts of a level, or acquire collectibles, in which some backtracking and replaying of the levels would be necessary. Other abilities help the player avoid damage from enemies.

When a cat comes into contact with a hazard or enemy, it becomes temporarily stunned and often kills the enemy in the process. This stun phase, indicated by spinning stars around the cat's head, lasts for a few seconds. If the cat runs into another hazard or enemy while in the stun phase, it dies, sending the player back to the map screen. If the cat gets out of the stun phase, however, it can run into another enemy without dying again.

Worlds[edit]

Super Cat Tales 2 spans seven worlds, with nine levels each. There are three designated level types:

  • Main levels are designated by a number when selected on the map. These stages involve traversing through a terrain with enemies and/or other hazards. Each level designated as the eighth on the map, ie. the last level in the world, features a boss leading towards the end.
  • Village levels are marked as the fifth main level in each world and are identified by the house icon on the transition screen when selecting a level. These stages feature multiple NPCs that can be talked to and generally no enemies or hazards.
  • Secret levels are identified by a question mark (?) at the start of the level. Most of these stages involve completing a specific challenge in order to obtain bells. Secret levels can be placed anywhere within the world and are only accessed by finding and landing on a red checkered pad.

Progression[edit]

Items[edit]

Items are accessible by tapping the shop icon in the upper left corner of the screen. This menu doubles as a shop with two sections. The first and default section allows players to not only purchase in-game items, but also equip items that they already have. These items cost a certain amount of coins, which can mainly be acquired in the levels or through in-app purchases. The second section contains in-app purchases that allow players to get more coins. If the player has purchased the ad removal premium upgrade, the prices of the items are reduced.

Items are reusable once purchased, and only one item can be equipped at a time.

Announcements[edit]

April 16, 2020[edit]

The trailer for the Super Cat Tales 2 "grand finale" is released, announcing the launch date as May 7.

May 7, 2020 update[edit]

On February 14, 2020, Gionathan announced that the new Super Cat Tales 2 update was "progressing nicely" and that he was hard at work on the last world. At the time he released the video, he had three levels left to complete.[2] This update included several new areas:

  • Lava World - The cats go to this area right after the supposed defeat of Lord Iridium.[3]
  • Ultima - A city serves as the setting for the last world encountered in Super Cat Tales 2.[2]
  • Cuddle Hotel - A hotel run by bunnies found in Ultima. Due to the shortage of vacancy, the cats are forced to share rooms. This area gives the player more insight into the relationships that the cats have with each other.[2]

Glitches[edit]

  • In Guldburg, during the cutscene with the cats and Kallio, the latter sends out a guard on patrol, however, sometimes the door will open, and the guard will not appear, as the cutscene goes.
  • In some cases, bouncy mushrooms will not function properly and cause the player to not complete a smooth jump arc.
  • A sleeping egg guy wearing sunglasses at the top of a building in Ramal Town cannot be woken up with the magic flute if the player reaches the area using Olli's cloak.
  • If the game's language is set to Chinese or Russian, the game may crash upon talking to Kuro in his secret hideout in World 3-2.

Reception[edit]

PocketGamer gave the game a silver 4-star rating, calling it "an interesting and engaging platformer... dripping with charm and clever ideas".[4]
