Fishing

Fishing is a minigame in Super Cat Tales: PAWS. It involves the player casting a line to catch fish that can be sold for coins or used to fulfil quests for certain NPCs.

Accessing[edit]

The fishing minigame can be played at fishing spots, which are levels unlocked by finding blue checkered spots similar to that of the red checkered spots that unlock secret levels. Once found, a fish-shaped button will appear on the world map that the player can press to enter.[1]

Fishing spots contain a dock with a blue flag and a body of water where the fish reside. Players will spawn onto a pink spot located a short distance from the dock on a patch of ground.

Prerequisites[edit]

The player must obtain a fishing rod by talking to Mara in Portobello (World 2-🏠) before they can fish. If a fishing spot is unlocked before they have a rod, Terje will tell the player to return once they have one. Once the fishing rod is obtained, Terje will leave the fishing spot to go to Portobello, where he can upgrade the player's fishing rod.

Day/Night cycles[edit]

Fishing spots are affected by the device's real-time clock. Certain fish will spawn only during specific times of the day. The appearance of the fishing spot's environment will also change in accordance with the time. There will be three parts to the cycle[2]:

  • Daylight - 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Dusk - 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Night - 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Gameplay[edit]

The minigame starts once the player moves the cat onto the dock. This will cause the cat to run towards the edge of the water and hold a fishing rod. The gameplay then proceeds as follows:

  1. Casting - A power bar appears at the top of the screen, allowing the player to adjust the strength of their cast. A higher amount of power allows the line to be cast at a farther distance.
  2. Reeling - As soon as the bobber hits the surface, the lure (displayed as a white target icon) will begin to sink. Pressing and holding on the screen causes the lure to move upwards and to the left. Releasing allows the lure to sink again.
  3. Catching - To hook a fish, the player must position the lure over one of the fish in the water. Fish are visible but silhouetted while swimming.
  4. Fighting - Once the fish is caught, the player must reel it in successfully by pressing and holding the side of the screen as indicated by the white arrows directly next to the fish. Following the arrow indicators allows the fish to gradually be brought back to the dock, where it is considered a successful catch. Pressing the incorrect side of the screen eventually causes the fish to escape, thus losing the catch. Stronger fish will change direction more rapidly. Fish can also jump out and into the water during the fight.

When a hooked fish is successfully reeled back to the dock, a red panel appears in the middle of the screen. Large white text appears in block letters at the top within the panel if the fish is a new record or catch. A picture of the fish is displayed on the left directly below and to the right of the picture shows the name of the fish, its size and ranking. The bottom line alternates between displaying the fish's type (common, rare, shiny) and the amount of points earned. The fish is then added to the player's inventory, where the player can view a description, quantity and biggest size of the fish caught.

Fish may be sold in the fish market at Portobello village to earn the player extra coins. Some fish will be required to complete certain quests or can be traded with NPCs for special items such as hats. There are also plans to add leaderboards based on the size of the catch.[3]

Scoring[edit]

Players earn points cumulatively across all fishing spots based on the type of catch and size. The total amount of points earned can be viewed at the bottom of the screen when loading the fishing spot. Players are ranked on the leaderboard for "Fishing Points".
